Ordering info for Treads and Top
Treads
All of our treads and tops are custom-made to order—we don't keep them in stock. This ensures you get exactly what you want, not just what we happen to have. Please take a moment to read the next few paragraphs to learn more about our process. If you have any questions or need assistance, don't hesitate to call us at 207-536-7860 or email us Here.
Our stair treads feature returns that are 1-1/4 inches wide and extend 1-1/2 inches past the back of the tread. To figure out if you need a left-hand or right-hand return, just stand at the bottom of the stairs and look up. All of the length measurements we provide are overall measurements, which means they include the return(s). For example, a single-return 36-inch tread has a 34-3/4-inch throat size, and a double-return 48-inch tread has a 45-1/2-inch throat size. Please note that any stair treads and risers over 48 inches long may be cut slightly oversized with uneven ends.
The top surface of our custom stair treads is perfectly sanded and maintained. However, the bottom is left in its natural, potentially rough state because it won't be visible once installed. Since every tread is custom-made, any orders that are revised or canceled after they enter production—which can happen as quickly as 24 hours after the order is placed—will be charged a restocking fee of up to 50%. Finally, because every piece of wood has its own unique character, the grain and color of your finished treads will naturally vary from the sample images shown.
Countertops
At O'Brien Hardwoods, we craft your countertops with meticulous attention to detail. The top surface and all four visible sides are perfectly sanded and maintained. Our standard process may leave the bottom surface with rough spots, as it won't be seen once installed, helping us keep costs efficient. However, you can select our Finish Grade Bottom option to ensure the underside is finished to the exact same high standard as the top surface and sides.
Again, as wood is a natural material, every piece of lumber has its own unique character; therefore, the grain and color will naturally vary from sample images. Our countertops are constructed without any butt joints or finger joints for a seamless and superior appearance, and they're made with the board face turned up (flat grain). These durable, custom wide plank wood products also work perfectly as premium wood desktops and wood table tops. As with the treads, every top is custom-made, any orders that are revised or canceled after they enter production—which can happen as quickly as 24 hours after the order is placed—will be charged a restocking fee of up to 50%.
Edge and End Grain Butcher Block Tops
Our edge grain butcher block countertops are made using 1-inch wide strips of solid wood. We only use strips that run the full length of the countertop. This premium construction gives them a cleaner appearance and superior durability compared to finger-jointed tops, which rely on joining together shorter, smaller pieces.
Our premium end grain butcher block countertops take that warmth and beauty to the next level. They're crafted from 1-1/2-inch square blocks, meticulously assembled with the end grain facing up. This construction doesn't just create a stunning, dynamic look; it also offers superior durability and performance—and it's incredibly gentle on your knife blades! . As with the treads and tops, every Butcher Block is custom-made, any orders that are revised or canceled after they enter production—which can happen as quickly as 24 hours after the order is placed—will be charged a restocking fee of up to 50%.
